Dear Tom,

Collecting email addresses from your visitors, prospects and customers is the single-most important aspect of running your business.

Since the can spam act of late 2003, online businesses have had a big change in how they treat email addresses. Done right, email marketing is not only legal but profitable. Done wrong it can lead you into a world of hurt.

In order to manage your email addresses you need to use some sort of list management program or service.

List management programs are computer programs you run on your server (website) which allow you to manage your email addresses. They allow you to send out email to your email lists, allow the individuals to automatically change their contact info or unsubscribe and generally automate the whole process.

List management services are companies which maintain your list for you on their servers. They run the list management software for you and also keep up with the changing requirements of individual internet service providers, etc.

While a few years ago running your own list program from your own server seemed to be a good choice, I never recommend that today. Keeping up with changing requirements is a full-time job and most of us have other things to do. I always recommend you go with a list management service which will keep up with all the details for you—all you need to worry about is marketing your site.

Over the years I have tried a variety of services, but the only one I recommend now is this one:

They have the highest delivery rate in the industry, they are economical and they keep up with all the requirements of the various ISPs and the laws to not only keep you legal but to make sure your emails get delivered.
